2022 was quite a year for sports. But with the major events scheduled for next year, 2023 is already shaping up to be an amazing one too.
2022 has been quite a year for sports — new sets of champions, veterans retiring, history being made, and a whole lot more.
However, 2023 is certainly shaping up to be a historic one as well, and we haven’t hit the new year yet.
With so many sports events to look forward to, the new year can’t come any quicker for us sports fans. So, here are five events we’re already counting down to.
1. Las Vegas Grand Prix
The Las Vegas Grand Prix is definitely going to be Formula 1’s event of the year for 2023. Imagine the glamour and extravagance of Monaco combined with the energy of Singapore’s night race, but doubled — that’s what fans expect.
The Las Vegas Grand Prix will be the first of its kind. Drivers will be racing along the famous strip, it will be F1’s first Saturday race in nearly 40 years, and prices all around the city for the event are sky-high.
As one of the most highly-anticipated races for 2023, F1 has embraced the grandeur of the city.
In fact, they have recently announced an “Emperor Package” worth $5 million, available from Caesars Entertainment. This package allows fans access to the Paddock Club, the Pit Lane walk, and exclusive access to Caesars’ space to watch the race.
Formula 1 is heading to Vegas on November 16 to 18, and F1 is definitely going to celebrate it.
2. FIBA World Cup
Especially for Filipino basketball fans, of which there are too many to count, the FIBA World Cup is one of the most exciting sports events of 2023.
As one of the co-hosts of the tournament, the Philippines will be holding games in the group stage and the finals rounds — this includes hosting Team USA on our local courts.
In addition, Gilas Pilipinas has also been preparing to compete against some of the strongest teams in the world. However, they are still yet to find out who they will be facing in the group stage, with the official draw to take place on April 29, right here in Manila.
The FIBA World Cup takes place from August 25 to October 9. Make sure to get your tickets before it’s too late.
3. FIFA Women’s World Cup
Next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup is going to be a historic one for the Philippines.
The country’s national team, the Filipinas, has become the first team in the country to qualify for the top football tournament in the world.
Taking place in New Zealand and Australia, the Filipinas will be competing against some of the top teams in the world. As they have been drawn into Group A of the tournament, they will be facing Switzerland, New Zealand, and Norway in the group stage.
This is not a tournament to miss, whether you’ll be watching from home or making the commute to see our girls play in New Zealand.
The Women’s World Cup takes place from July 20 to August 20.
4. Super Bowl LVII
The NFL Super Bowl always counts as one of the most highly-anticipated sports events of the year all around the world.
Although we do not yet know which teams will be playing for the coveted trophy, we do know one thing for sure: Rihanna will be playing at the Halftime Show. And everyone is raving about it already.
The Super Bowl Halftime Show is undoubtedly the biggest halftime performance of any sports event in the world. And although there are still more performers yet to be announced, Rihanna as the headliner is certainly enough to excite us for the NFL playoffs.
The Super Bowl LVII is scheduled to take place on February 12.
5. Australian Open 2023
Finally, we have the Australian Open.
Tennis is generally an unpredictable sport, despite the top names who have dominated the game for decades. At every tournament, and as an individual sport, it’s impossible to be sure who will advance.
But next year, we will have someone to root for: Alex Eala.
Before the end of 2022, the Junior Grand Slam Champion announced that she will be making her professional Grand Slam debut at the 2023 Australian Open qualifiers. With this, she gets the opportunity to compete for a spot in one of the major Grand Slams of the year as a pro.
Should she make it to the main draw, she will be competing in the Australian Open from January 16 to January 29.
