After three years as Ferrari’s Team Principal, and following a rocky 2022 F1 season, Mattia Binotto is resigning from his position.
Over the last few weeks, rumors and speculations regarding Mattia Binotto’s future as Team Principal of Ferrari, the team has confirmed today that the Italian is resigning from his position.
“With the regret that this entails, I have decided to conclude my collaboration with Ferrari,” Binotto said in a statement.
“I am leaving a company that I love, which I have been part of for 28 years, with the serenity that comes from the conviction that I have made every effort to achieve the objectives set.”
While his departure may be bittersweet for some, without a World Championship since 2007, many Ferrari fans have been hoping for a change in management within the team for some time. And given their 2022 performance, his resignation comes as no shock.
Center of attention
At the start of the 2022 Formula 1 season, Ferrari looked to be in shape to compete for the World Championship. Charles Leclerc won two out of the first two races and led the Drivers Standings for some time.
But eventually, after Red Bull caught up and took over in the lead, the Prancing Horses were unable to stay competitive enough to challenge for the title and shuffled between good race weekends and bad.
Because of this, Ferrari has been under much scrutiny throughout the season. Surely, they should have racked up more than four race wins. And amidst all the turmoil, Mattia Binotto, as team principal, caught most of the attention.
According to the statement, he is now only set to stay on until December 31.
A new era?
Now, all eyes will be on Ferrari as they await the announcement of their new team principal.
Currently, Ross Brawn, former F1 engineer and team principal, is one of the names rumored to replace Binotto at Ferrari.
Additionally, Alfa Romeo’s team principal, Frédéric Vasseur, is also a strong candidate that Ferrari may be looking into.
It is no easy task to lead a Formula 1 team, let alone a historic team such as Ferrari. As the oldest team in the sport, and one of the most well-known and beloved around the world, the pressure to perform is not for everyone.
With this major change in the team, will Ferrari finally see a new (and hopefully competitive) era?
