Coming Soon: These are the Sports Movies to Watch Out For in 2023

Even if you’re not a sports fan, it’s still hard to not enjoy sports movies. Tales of redemption, underdogs, and victories and defeats — what’s not to love?

Last year saw the release of some of the best sports movies, like Adam Sandler’s Hustle and the Disney+ movie Rise. But, there is still a lot more to look forward to this 2023.

So keep your eyes peeled. Here are some of the most exciting sports movies coming your way.

1. Creed III – March 3, 2023

Rocky is one of the most iconic movies of all time. And clearly, people can’t seem to get enough of it because the ninth installment in the Rocky franchise is coming out next year: Creed III.

In case you didn’t watch the first two Creed movies, Michael B. Jordan plays Adonis Creed, the son of Rocky Balboa’s biggest competitor, Apollo Creed. The first movie was released back in 2015, and the sequel, three years later.

Creed and Creed II both saw the return of Sylvester Stallone as the great Rocky Balboa, mentoring Adonis in his own boxing career. But, in this third installment, we may not be seeing Stallone playing the beloved character. The spotlight is handed over to Jordan.

The movie is set to hit theatres on March 3, 2023.

2. White Men Can’t Jump – May 19, 2023

This title should definitely sound familiar to you. The original White Men Can’t Jump still remains one of the best comedies from the 90s. The movie told the story of two basketball hustlers, played by Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes, as they scheme their way into winning money in a basketball tournament.

And it remains iconic. To this day, basketball commentators still reference the movie in many conversations. And lucky for us, we’re getting a remake.

Sinqua Walls was cast as Snipes’ character, Kamal Allen, and Jack Harlow was cast as Harrelson’s character, Billy Hoyle.

We don’t know about you, but we’re definitely excited to see how they live up to these iconic characters. And by the looks of the trailer, it seems like they’re gonna pull it off.

The movie is set to release on May 19, 2023.

3. Next Goal Wins – September 22, 2023

If you miss the FIFA World Cup action as we do, you should definitely be excited for Next Goal Wins. The name may sound familiar to you, as this new movie is based on a documentary of the same title that was released in 2014.

The movie is based on the true story of the Dutch-American football coach, Thomas Rongen. In the movie, he is tasked to turn one of the weakest football teams into a World Cup-worthy team. And don’t we all love a good underdog story?

Taika Waititi, writer of the Oscar-winning movie Jojo Rabbit, is the director and co-writer of the movie. Iain Morris, who created the hit show The Inbetweeners, is also a co-writer of the movie. So while we can expect some elements of drama that most sports movies have, this one will likely have the pair’s comedic touch.

The movie is expected to hit theatres in September 2023.

4. The Underdoggs – October 20, 2023

And no, we didn’t misspell the title.

The Underdoggs is a sports comedy that tells the story of Jaycen Jenning — who will be played by Snoop Dogg (now the title makes sense, right?) — a former NFL star who finds himself coaching a youth football team.

The movie was written by Charles Stone III, who also previously wrote hit movies like Drumline and Uncle Drew. Starring in the movie will also be Tika Sumpter, Mike Epps, Andrew Schulz, and George Lopez.

We find it a little bit of a challenge to picture Snoop Dogg as an American football player. So we’re just going to have to wait until October 20, 2023, to see it for ourselves.
