Carlos Yulo Earns 3 New Medals From World Cup in Doha

Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo finished the 2023 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Series in Doha with a trifecta, bringing home a bronze, silver, and gold medal from his performances.

Carlos Yulo had a better weekend than most, as he spent the past three days impressing at the FIG Gymnastics World Cup Series in Doha, Qatar. The Filipino opened his campaign on a strong note, competing in his favorite event: the floor exercise. After the qualifications last Thursday, he advanced to the final round with a score of 14.5.

In the final round of the floor exercise, Yulo executed a near-perfect performance, finishing with a score of 14.833 to bag the gold medal.

This gold medal signified redemption for Yulo, who, in the last World Cup series in Cottbus, Germany, only managed to reach 20th place for his floor exercise routine. Having won the gold medal on Friday, Carlos Yulo went into the remainder of the weekend with confidence, and it showed in his performances for parallel bars and vault.

During his execution of the parallel bars, FIG described Yulo as “so smooth and emphasizes each element on Parallel Bars so well that by the end of his routine, each skill is eliciting its own round of applause.”

Finishing a brilliant routine, he scored 14.933, securing him a silver medal behind Ukraine’s Illia Kovtun who edged out the Filipino with a 14.966. Finally, the 23-year-old rounded out his campaign with another impressive performance in vault, where he scored an average of 14.883 to finish third behind Artur Davtyan (15.083 points) and Igor Radivilov (14.899).

His three medals in Doha certainly signify a big step for Yulo, improving from a one-medal finish in Germany last week. Now, with more World Cup experience under his belt, the Filipino will be heading to the next leg in Baku, Azerbaijan on March 9 to 12.
